Smudging is an ancient tradition and ritual to cleanse and purify a place or person. Rooms can be smudged when you feel stagnant energy, a spirit is present, or there is negativity causing harm and misfortune. People can also be smudged when their energy is low, they have taken on a negative entity, they are sick, or are an empath and need to clear some of the gunk in their aura. Smudging is traditionally done with dried sage stick which you burn into a shell and then fan the smoke with a feather. It is the smoke that clears the energy. While this is all good and great, I was personally never able to multi-task in this way so I smudge a few different ways.
- I use one of my own sage sticks which you can find here. I make these myself with dried sage, sweetgrass, and flowers. The sage is for clearing negativity ( in all its forms), the sweetgrass is for restoring sweetness and positivity to the room or person once it’s been cleared, and the flowers add beauty and love to the process.
- I burn pieces of the sage, sweetgrass, and flowers in a small bowl. This is quick, easy, and leaves less of a mess.
- My husband can’t stand the smell of sage smoke so I’ll appease him at times and use my Hardcore Cleanser Spray instead. This spray has a few REALLY powerful additions to it. It has Florida Water, distilled water, clary sage essential oil, and dried sage pieces. Florida water is a mixture of water, alcohol, and essential oils. It has been used for hundreds of years as a tool to rid negativity and low vibrating spirits. It is also used for cleansing and protection. The floral and citrus smell of the water is what is known to banish evil and promote light, love, and happiness.
- Lastly, I also use Palo Santo which is an ancient holy wood. This wood is used in South America in the same way that sage is used in North America, to cleanse, clear, and purify. Palo Santo is often used in shamanic healing rituals and is well liked for it’s woodsy, pure scent.
So those are some of the different ways that I have personally cleansed myself or a room. But one more important factor that I ALWAYS do when smudging is a cleansing prayer. There are many that you can find online or in books. But here are some of my favorites.

When time is limited, I use this ” I choose to cleanse myself (or room) of all negativity. With that I ask the divine to bring in white light and bathe my body in love and light.”
You can also use the violet flame decree to transmute negativity into positivity.
“I am the violet flame
In action in me now
I am the violet flame
to light aloe I bow
I am the violet flame
In mighty cosmic power
I am the light of God
Shining every hour
I am the violet flame
Blazing like the sun
I am God’s Sacred power
Freeing everyone”
