Tomorrow is my 30th birthday. I can’t decide if I want to add a smiley emoji, sad face, or confused face. I think turning 30 is similar to New Years (times 100). Full of reflections, goal setting, and drinking.
Those of you who know me know that I have spent a considerable amount of time the past few months reflecting, judging, wondering, considering, reading, watching, and dreaming. You can read more about how I feel about Saturn Return (turning 30) here.
Here’s what I’ve figured out that I want you to think about too…
- All we really have is this present moment. The past is gone and the future doesn’t exist. Right now, is the only real point in time. Although reflections are great for figuring out where we want to go, living in the present moment is the only way out of the suffering that living in the past or future tripping bring. What if I get Ebola (future tripping)? What if I had taken that other job instead (living in the past)? Are any of these thoughts actually serving us in the present moment (the only one we have). I’m gonna go with no.
- Every difficult situation is a lesson. I don’t care how difficult, it’s a lesson. Someone took the last jelly donut – LESSON. Your boyfriend cheated – LESSON. You got fired – LESSON. Learning to find the lesson in our experiences is crucial to our survival and growth. I have recently become aware of a lesson that has showed up in my life in 100 different ways that I have still not grasped. That brings me to my last point.
- Letting go of attachments. I know, I know, you couldn’t possibly let go of your iPhone. But that’s not what I’m talking about here. Let go of the attachments to thoughts and outcomes. Not everything is going to go your way, that’s a fact. But if your expectations are shifted to “Whatever happens is right for me” or “What does that universe want me to learn from this” you will eliminate 90% of the suffering in your life. It’s about taking a step back, a deep breath, and relaxing into the present and accepting what is. Do you think you can do that? Just one time, today, let go of your expectations and all that future tripping. See what happens.
